Warhammer 40k Campaign Weekend Prep – Part 1

So I am known for my ability to build and paint armies at a rapid pace.  My secret?  I always have an event I am preparing for!  I thought it would be fun to document the process I go through when preparing for an event and taking a new army.

Choosing the Event

The first thing I do is choose which event I am going to attend.  I base this off several factors, including previous experience with the event, what my friends in the community are attending and timing.

When the tickets for the January Campaign Weekend went on sale I had no events booked in after the first week of November so I knew I would have plenty of time to prepare.  I have also attended the first two campaign weekends and know that it is a really fun event and well run.  Finally my friends Edd and Stephanie were attending so it seemed a slam dunk!

All that was left was to secure a ticket then plan what army I would take!

Choosing the Army

I was hoping to get an Imperium ticket (as a narrative event the tickets are broken down by faction, Imperium, Chaos and Invaders) as I had attended previuosly as both Invaders and Chaos.  So I checked on the day tickets were released on my first break, and Huzzah! managed to get an Imperium ticket!

Every time I had attended previously I took a brand new army with me.  I wanted this time to be no different, but which army to choose?

I had toyed with a small Space Wolves force earlier in the year and really liked how they had come out, but lacked the inspiration needed to make it a full force.

I then read Ashes of Prospero by Gav Thorpe and knew my decision was made.  The opportunity to combine Heresy era Space Wolves with their Warhammer 40,000 counterparts (including Primaris marines because they look fantastic) couldn’t be passed up.

Selecting and Painting the Army

Aggressors – just love the look of theses models

You will see all over this post the models that I had already completed.  With this being a narrative army (and Chapter Approved coming out before the event) I don’t want to settle on a firm list too far in advance.  Instead I know there were certain elements that I want to include.

With this being the 13th Great Company I have to include their Jarl – Bulvseye.  I have already converted up a model for him, will post it once painted.  I also want to include several units of Wulfen as lost members of his Great Company that had to go the long way round to the 41st millennium.

Other than that some heresy era vehicles/dreadnaughts and of course Thunderwolf Cavalry are all musts.

Where Next?

Next up is to get more models built and painted for the force, including getting the Great Company symbol applied to each marine.  I also need to write the background and narrative for Bulveye and his Great Company since the events of Ashes of Prospero which will help me decide what units to include.

I hope you enjoyed reading this, I am planning on doing a regular series of blog posts following my progress on this project.  Please feel free to leave a comment below.
